Anyone familiar with business management knows about setting goals--attainable, measurable,challenging goals. Christians who are passionate about growing spiritually also can benefit from setting goals. Good spiritual goals encourage us to move forward. They deal with the future.

Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover. In accordance with this custom, they attended the feast when He was twelve years old. But when it was over and everyone was on the way home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem without His mother and Joseph knowing it. They assumed He was somewhere among the travelers, and they journeyed on for a day while looking for Him among their relatives and friends. Still not finding Him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for Him.

God answers prayer when that prayer takes into account who He is. The great pray-ers of the Bible do just that--they review His attributes, characteristics or qualities, and His identity. When a person recognizes God for who He is, when a person demonstrates reverence for Him, when a person shows genuine concern for God's reputation in the world, he is acknowledging God.

A college football coach in the Bronx (New York) built his team around good character qualities. Instead of displaying their names on the back of their jerseys, the Maritime College players displayed words like family, respect, accountability, and character. Before each game, coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes reminded his team to play by those principles on the field.
